Please check back to follow our NWT Teams as they compete at their respective Canadian Curling Championships.
2011 Canadiam Mixed- Morris, Manitoba
Day 8
One game today- the island province of Prince Edward who are on a roll and playing very well. One bad end again hurt us dropping another 5 spot. We had some good ends, but it was hard to get back in it from that.
Off to watch the Ontario-New Brunswick tiebreaker and then the winner take on Manitoba. Then it will be time to start decorating for the elevator party....
Day 7
Game 1- BC- really rough start giving up 3 in the 1st and a steal of 4 in end 2. Ticking a ton of guards this week and not quite getting the rolls we need. We held our own after that but it was all in vain.
Between games the BC lead twisted her ankle on the stairs and suffered a bad sprain- now sporting a fancy set of crutches.
Game 2- Saskatchewan- played well over all but had the one bad end and it cost us. As both teams were already eliminated it was a bit lighter atmosphere, including a 5th end shooter break. Their team played well, actually lying 7 in one end with 2 rocks to come. We thought about the freeze but settled on the high hard one knocking out a couple of their stones.
Through a blizzard we travelled to Applebees and the casino. Danille got her dollar signs messed up as she quickly realized the dollar slots were not penny slots and Kalie's lucky quickly ran out as the boys began watching/waiting for her to finish so they could leave!
Day 6
Game 1- We played Quebec who dismantled Manitoba yesterday in the morning game so we were a bit concerned about getting them on the early draw. We had a good game controling the play. in one end we had a really good chess game going with us ending up scoring only 1 but there was some great potential. During that end the 2 teams burned 20 minutes combined off the time clocks! Time was a bit of a concern later in the game and we ended with just over 4 minutes left on the clock- but came away with the win
Game 2- We played Nova Scotia. Paul Flemming put on a clinic on run backs with 5 of them, a couple of them being doubles to turn ends around. We played pretty well in that game holding our own most od the way. Danielle made a great freeze to set us up in the 5th before Flemming's raise double erased them.
The team went in to Winnipeg to experience the Keg- Steve had never been there before
Brian and Steve watched the Asham Stompers show in the evening which was amazing
Day 5
Game 1- We took on Alberta in the morning, and it became apparent we are not a Tuesday morning team. We had chances but gave them a pile of opportunities, and lost. We missed a bunch of shots by the other side of the inch crashing on the front with about 5 of Danielle's draws. Luckily we had time between games to regroup.
We met with a class of grade 3 students from Morris who asked us about how we started the game and how long we played. It was fun and they had a great time cheering for us. Please find a picture below.
The NWT flag hangs proudly in the main hallway of the hotel right outside Kalie and Danielle's room- nobody can get to their room without going under it
Game 2- We took on the team from Labrador and Newfoundland in what most describe as a defensive struggle . It was a fun game with a pile of rocks in play every end and the Territories came out on top- meaning Steve did not need to get his toenails painted (a little side bet). This was also the last game with our families proudly waving NWT flags, they will be missed! Thank you for supporting us!
After the game Danielle proceeded to milk the players from both teams in a couple of games of dice the whole while pretending to feel really bad about scooping our money...
Day 4
The Ontarios..
Game 1 Southern Ontario- had a not so bad game with a really bad end dropping a 5 spot in the 5th end, and losing 7-5. It was a game of breaks and they did not go our way though having one shot back would have been huge
Game 2 Northern Ontario- Everyone played very well and it was an exciting game. We controlled the game from the outset and held on for an extra end win running a couple ends of peel to hold on in 10 and 11. finally we broke the goose egg!!!
Day 3
We played Manitoba on sheet B- where there is a 2008 Canadian Firefighters Championship pin in the ice.... Our fans outnumbered theirs with Danielle and Kalie's family in the crowd. We played catch up most of the game but had our chances missing an important quiet weight tap out in the 4th for 2 that would have left us 1 down. All of us played well with a couple of key misses being the difference, as they played very well. Kalie wasn't feeling well but still shot lights out. Ice was great but fudged a bit down the middle later on in the game. Still running nice though.
We have made many friends as we hosted Ontario the first night for post game pizza and then Newfoundland the second night. The front desk deserves credit for guarding it with their lives until we get back from our nightly games!
Day 2
Started with our pregame practice and team meetings. Ontario was a no show for the team meetings so they had to forfiet the hammer for the entire week. According to them they were sitting in another room wondering why no one was there. Someone commented about wanting to mount a horse...
Game 1
The new rule to decide hammer is the draw to the button at least each member of the team has to have at least 2 attempts throughout the event. Brian volunteered to be the first guinea pig and threw the rock through the rings, because being the first draw, and first practice we had to throw another stone and it could not be Kelln again, Danielle quickly volunteered to sweep, so Kalie gave it a try and well, she ended up with the same result.
The game was close, blanking the first & third, NB made a nice shot for 2 in the second , Steve had to draw against two in the fourth for 1. In the fifth NB drew gainst two for one. After the break we got our 2 in the seventh, and stole one in the eighth. We gave up a score of 2 in 9, and they ran us out of rocks in 10. The ice was keener (close to Yellowknife weight) than practice, and has got a bit straighter.
Post Game
The Elvis show- Kalie is Elvis' new biggest fan, she was absolutely sold on the pelvis action. Was a good show, and fun to watch. Brian got his 15 minutes of fame as he was picked out of the crowd for a unique feature of his... Neither of the girls fainted. We'll post picures later- Elvis has a Yellowknife connection as he is a cousin of Brenda McMullen. The show wasn't Corny, but the guy who performed was- his name is Corny Rempel...
Day 1
We flew into Winnipeg on an Air Canada CRJ- same as they fly to Yellowknife. There were a couple of basketball teams from BC on the same flight. One player was 7 foot 2- and entered the plane hunched over, with his sholders touching the overhead bins on both sides. He had to sit in the front of the plane because the overhead bins are lower in the back and his head would hit them. The town of Morris is absolutely smothered in posters with the pictures of all the teams. Toured the facility today and it is awesome-click here to see the rings! Went in to Winnipeg to do a bit of shopping in preparation for the opening meet and greet and closing banquet- pictures to follow.
For the meet & greet, we decided to purchase special shirts one size fits all except that the only one the shirt fit was Steve. So Brian had no choice but to copy the ladies and wear a black tshirt underneath. Pictures to follow much later. (Warning to those of weak stomach). Danielle drouled over large New York Fries while Kalie ate half a pizza. Brian and Steve watch their calories and enjoyed their smoothies.
Kalie and Danielle looking into our mirror competitior gifts (they are in the shape of a curling rock with the event logo pieced into them)
Please note the poster to our left, to our right and there is one in front of us in our hotel lobby. The entire town is covered in them. The ones in the hotel change numerous times a day as we are asked to sign the new one when we walk into the lobby.
